Emergency workers are currently trying to get to two paragliders who got into some trouble while going over a mountain near Wanaka, in Otago.
Senior Sergeant James Ure, of the Southern District Command Centre, said they got a report at about 5pm from a member of the public who spotted the pair getting into difficulty.
"[The rescue] is still ongoing at the moment and we haven't got any confirmation that we've got them off - we're just waiting to hear back.''
Mr Ure said the paragliders were in a difficult spot on Roys Peak, just to the west of the Wanaka township.
"Staff have gone up there with the helicopter and two Alpine Cliff Rescue team members to try and bring them back safely."
