A man who crashed his paraglider into a tree at Mt Maunganui came away unscathed aside from "an injured ego".
Chris Wright was the centre of attention at Marine Parade when he crashed into a large Norfolk pine about 6pm yesterday. The 47-year-old Aucklander escaped any injury as a result of crashing into the tree, which initially prompted calls to 111.
"I've got an injured ego, a bit of pride lost, but that's about it," he said.
Mr Wright came into land at the spot because it was away from people and beach-goers, he said.
"I looked at the grass area where to land but the wing tip of the right hand wing caught the edge of the branch of this large tree and it just sort of stopped."
