Papua, also known as West Papua, is a province of Indonesia and was previously known as Irian Jaya. Other former names are West Irian and Irian Barat.
It comprises the western half (approximately) of the island of Papua (also known as New Guinea).
The eastern part of the island is part of the independent country Papua New Guinea.
