The main event at the Mahunga golf club over the weekend was the hosting of the Copthorne Solway Park open men's fourball tournament on Sunday.
The Greenaway Cup competition for the year was decided on Saturday. In the third round of this competition, Noelene Stevenson and Kevin Hunter had the best score of 69 nett, which was one better than Bev Todd and Maurice O'Reilly, Heather and Bill Ousey and Ngaire and Joe Graham. In the overall competition, the title was shared by the combinations of Ngaire and Joe Graham and Heather and Bill Ousey on a total of 138 nett for the best two rounds.
Saturday's club competition for those not involved in the Greenaway Cup was a medal round. The first group fell to David O'Reilly with a 69 nett, with Lance Duckett and Greg Granich both finishing with 71 netts. The second group had the better scoring, with Arona Solomon taking the top billing with a 63 nett, while Graham Duckett and Nikaiya Graham both had 68 netts.
The Solway Pie Shop nearest to the pin was taken out by Martin Andrew, with Damian Carroll taking the Mitre 10 one on the third, Bill Ousey the McAuley's Transport one on the sixth hole, Allen Smith the Solway Butchery one on the eighth, Suele Soromon the Alister Bruce Affordable Sheds one on the 10th hole and Brian Chappell the Dinah and Deb Keats Professionals Real Estate one on the 17th hole. The All Teed Up one on the fourth hole was taken by Anita Karaitiana. Holes in two were scored by Suele Soromon and Allen Smith.
Sunday saw the Copthorne Solway Park Wairarapa Open Men's Fourball tournament being played over 36 holes.
In the morning round, the best gross score was the 66 from Matthew Pegg and Colin Trigell, while John Schaafhausen and Riki Hunt posted a 70, Mark and Godfrey Bowden a 72, and then Roger Hanson and Blair Duckett, Bruce Herangi and Byron Karaitiana and Lance Sayer and Alister Smith with 73s.
In the nett competition, there were two morning rounds of 59 nett, which were scored by Brian Chappell and Kevin Hunter and Layton Kawana and Phillip Granich. One stroke behind them was the pairing of Martin Andrew and Geoff Peck, with the pairings of Darryl Coley and Greg Granich, Graeme Dick and Adam Ross, Frank Martin and Whana Rohe, Alan Eagle and Allan Biel and Harley and Neville Biel all on 61 nett.
The afternoon round saw some of the leaders consolidate third positions, while others fell away.
In the gross, the first round leader in Matthew Pegg and Colin Trigell added a 69 to their morning round to take out the trophy on 135. David and Jason Sadler closed with the afternoon's best round of 68 to move up into second place on 143, with Lance Sayer and Alister Smith taking third place with a one under par total for the afternoon. The next three spots had the pairings of Bruce Herangi and Byron Karaitiana, Graeme Dick and Adam Ross and John Schaafhausen and Riki Hunt all finishing on 145.
Layton Kawana and Phillip Granich added a 62 nett in the afternoon round to finish on 121 nett and so take out the Roy Goodin Trophy. David Will and Alan Heffer posted a nett of 61 to finish on 123 nett and take second place on the countback from Alan Eagle and Allan Biel and Brian Chappell and Kevin Hunter. Wayne Evans and Laurence Butler had the best afternoon round of 60 nett to move up into fifth place on 124, while Harley and Neville Biel finished on 126 nett for sixth place.
Holes in two were score by Godfrey Bowden, Damian Carroll, Eric Collings, Whana Rohe, Lance Duckett, Riki Hunt, Jason Sadler and Bruce Herangi.
On Tuesday, the veterans group played in a stableford round, and for the most part the scores were very good. In the ladies division, Betty Loader took out the second group with her 40 point total, with Cilva Richmond taking second place on 36 points, with Daphne Jordan one point adrift. In the first group, Maria Lauvi prevailed with 35 points, while both Janet Shaw and Nooroa Rota had 34 points.
In the men's second division, John Mudgway had the day's best total of 44 points, which was only two points more than Ian Gemmill's round, with Bevan Hefferen taking third place with 41 points. Fred Brittain took out the first group on 40 points, with Doug Simpson the runner-up on 35, followed by Ray Loader on 34.
The ladies' nearest to the pins on both the third and sixth hole went to Betty Loader, while the men's ones went to Bevan Hefferen on the sixth and Doug Simpson on the seventh hole. Bevan Hefferen scored the day's only hole in two.
This weekend
The men are playing the first round of the Bill Woods trophy on Saturday, while on Sunday they will be competing in the final of the Mahunga Shoot Out competition, with the tee off scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
It is just over three weeks to the club's Christmas Tournament on Saturday, December 11.
