KEY POINTS:
A light plane has crashed near Birdlings Flat on the Canterbury coast, just south of Banks Peninsula.
The Cherokee, with two people on board, came down at Kaitorete Spit at 11.15am, setting alight surrounding tussock country.
The pair on board escaped with only minor injuries, police said.
Emergency services are at the scene.
