A 60-year-old man and 10-year-old boy were rescued from Wellington's south coast overnight after getting lost trying to walk from Makara Beach to Owhiro Bay.
The pair set off from Makara Beach about 11.30am yesterday, but were reported overdue about 9.50pm last night, Central police communications inspector Marty Parker said.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was sent up and found them just past midnight about 2 kilometres north of Cable Bay.
They were both in good health and had extra water and a change of clothes with them, Inspector Parker said.
"They were pretty much geared up for a day trip, but possibly not an overnight, with the weather changes we've been having at the moment it really pays to forecast for that sort of thing,'' Inspector Parker said.
