Police and Child Youth and Family (CYF) staff are hunting for two young men who escaped from the youth prison at Rolleston, near Christchurch, last night.
Details of the escape were sketchy and CYF was saying little about the incident.
Spokeswoman Lee Harris-Royal confirmed to NZPA that "two absconders" got away from the youth justice facility last night.
They were later said to be 16-year-old males.
"We're working with the police and investigating the circumstances around the escape," she said.
