Two people injured when their car left the road near Masterton were extremely lucky a passing truck driver spotted them, police said today.
About 5.30pm yesterday a logging truck driver noticed skid marks leading off the Masterton-Riversdale Highway.
He stopped to investigate, and discovered a BMW had plummeted down the bank. He then contacted emergency services to come to the scene.
Sergeant Chris Megaw told NZPA the pair were lucky to have been spotted.
"If you can imagine a forestry area, a windy road leading downhill with a drop-away bank on one side -- that's where the car went, five to 10 metres down this bank.
"It was in view of the road, but difficult to see if you're just passing along."
The accident happened about 15 minutes before the truck drove by, Mr Megaw said.
The 40-year-old Stokes Valley driver was taken to Masterton Hospital with cuts and abrasions. He was released today.
A 34-year-old Masterton man was taken to Wellington Hospital by rescue helicopter with serious injuries.
