KEY POINTS:
Police have named two people killed in a high-speed collision near Auckland Airport on Wednesday.
They were Stephen Ashley Currie, 21, of Tauranga, and Young Foon Hwang, 53, of Birkenhead.
Both were passengers. Mr Currie was in a silver Altezza driven by another young man, while Ms Hwang was in an SUV.
They were heading in opposite directions on George Bolt Drive just after 9pm.
"The Altezza lost control on a bend, crossed the centre strip and rotated backwards into a car coming the other way," said Sergeant Stu Kearns of the serious crash unit.
The road is in a 100km/h zone but "the Altezza was well in excess of the speed limit," he said.
Both passengers died at the scene .
The drivers were taken to Auckland's Middlemore Hospital where they remain in a stable but serious condition.
Police are still investigating the crash and no charges have been laid.
