KEY POINTS:
A couple charged with wilfully neglecting their 18-month-old son have been given until Monday to notify friends, family and church members.
The 27-year-old man and his 30-year-old partner were arrested on Monday after a two-week investigation into injuries their son received between June 1 and July 23.
They each face one charge of wilful neglect of the toddler - who remains in hospital with a broken arm and leg - in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering.
Doctors say the injuries occurred at separate times and would have left the boy in excruciating pain.
Lawyer Josefina Fuimaono-Sapolu sought name suppression for the couple when they appeared in the Waitakere District Court yesterday.
Ms Fuimaono-Sapolu said they had told only a few of their friends and family of their arrest and wanted more time to tell others, including members of their church.
The lawyer added that the couple were also concerned about the impact on their six children if their names were released, although only one was at primary school and two had a different surname.
All the children are now in Child, Youth and Family custody.
Judge Philip Recordon denied the application, saying there were no compelling or special circumstances to grant name suppression.
He did, however, order interim suppression until 4pm on Monday so the parents could inform the rest of their family and friends.
The couple, who have been remanded on bail, are due to reappear in court at the end of the month.
