An 18-year-old woman who was waiting for a taxi in Whangarei with friends was "unable to see or open her eye" after a person in a car fired a paintball gun at the group and drove off.
Senior Sergeant Stephanie Hudson said the group of five was waiting for a taxi outside Bank Street Traders, on the corner of Bank and Water Sts.
A car "slowly" drove through the intersection and the passenger pulled out a paintball gun and shot "rapid fire" at the group about 3.33am yesterday.
"One female was shot in the eye and was unable to see or open her eye," she said.
Ms Hudson said the vehicle was a four-door silver Chrysler saloon with tinted windows and shiny, silver mag wheels.
