KEY POINTS:
Paedophiles are continuing to offend while being on tough supervision sentences in the past three years.
Two high-risk paedophiles, in the past year, have committed further sex crimes -- one against a child, the Dominion-Post reported today.
The extended supervision scheme monitors high-risk paedophiles for up to 10 years after they are freed in an effort to prevent reoffending.
However, three paedophiles have been jailed for new sex crimes while under supervision in the past three years, according to figures released under the Official Information Act.
The figures also showed that 30 paedophiles out of 109 on the scheme have been sent back to jail for reoffending, breaching supervision rules, or for crimes committed before they were on supervision.
Corrections Department probation and offender services general manager Katrina Casey said that although the public was safer with the extended supervision scheme there was no way to stop reoffending completely.
