A paedophile who refused to attend a sex offenders rehabilitation programme is living in Wellington after his jailers could no longer keep him behind bars.
William Walter Peter Vernon Tyler-Galerne is living in the eastern suburb of Strathmore after almost a decade in prison for child sex offences, the Dominion Post reported today.
The Parole Board refused to release Tyler-Galerne after he had served two-thirds of his 7-1/2-year sentence for sexually violating a 10-year-old girl, because of fears he would reoffend.
He was kept in prison until the last day.
Parole Board decisions reveal Mr Tyler-Galerne's unwillingness to acknowledge his offending, apart from an indecent assault.
The offender's neighbours have been informed.
He is banned from having unsupervised contact with children or from going within 100 metres of schools, kindergartens, parks or recreational areas.
However those conditions expire in August.
The Corrections Department wants an extended supervision order, reserved for "high-risk" sex offenders, such as child rapist Lloyd McIntosh, who are identified as needing up to 10 years of monitoring to prevent reoffending.
A court is due to consider the department's application on Tuesday.
