Paddle boarder Luke Reilly had a close encounter with an orca on Monday, just 200 metres from the shore at Kuaotunu on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Mr Reilly was out for a morning paddle when the orca swam up underneath his board.
The curious animal breached the surface just metres away from him as he tried to film the unique experience.
