KEY POINTS:
A Grey Lynn resident is playing detective in an attempt to find a rare cat worth $2000 he believes may have been cat-napped.
The sphinx cat, named Axel, disappeared from owner Daryl Ojala's property on Monday, and a neighbour said he saw it being taken.
When Mr Ojala's neighbour saw a woman snooping in a Williamson Ave property, he approached her and heard a miaow.
Mr Ojala has a team of eight friends hunting the thief until 2am each night.
"[Axel] is as meaningful as a child to me. She is very precious.
"A year ago a beautiful Bengal went missing near here. Just look at the missing-cat posters in Grey Lynn. Thieves obviously know how much they're worth."
