Owls get their claws into Big Hoot art trail

Auckland's biggest mass-participation, public art trail will fill the city's streets with a range of original artworks early next year.

The Big Hoot charity art trail will place 46 unique and colourful owl art sculptures (each 1.65m tall) at locations around the city.

They will be custom-painted by well-known artists including Dick Frizzell, Jeff Thompson, Flox (Hayley King), Peata Larkin, Weilun Ha and Jessica Pearless alongside some of New Zealand's most exciting up-and-coming creatives.

Haier Big Hoot art curator Monique Cairns says the trail will be a must-see for members of the public seeking a free and fun family activity, and for collectors looking to scope out unique artwork for their collection.

"It's very exciting to have 46 owls exhibited on the art trail, and every one of them will bring its own flair and flavour."

The trail opens on Saturday, March 3 next year and will run for 10 weeks before the owls are auctioned to raise vital funds for Child Cancer Foundation.

The project is presented by Child Cancer Foundation in partnership with Wild in Art.
