Lisa Owen will replace Simon Dallow as host of the current affairs show Agenda, adding traction to his claim to the TV One 6pm newsreader's chair. Owen is ending a two-year stint for TVNZ in London.
"We are talking with Simon about other roles," said TVNZ news and current affairs chief Bill Ralston.
Dallow has been considered the front-runner since TVNZ decided not to renew Judy Bailey's contract beyond the end of the year.
Dallow, Peter Williams, Kate Hawkesby, Bernadine Oliver-Kerby and Wendy Petrie have interviews this week.
It is not known whether Mr Ralston wants a single newsreader or a return to two.
Mr Ralston said a decision on political editor Mark Sainsbury's replacement was likely by the end of the week.
