A South African overstayer may be deported after being accused of assault and threatening to kill.
Craig Robin Broughton, 34, an engineer, denied the charges when he appeared in Nelson District Court yesterday.
He has been living in Nelson for eight years.
Broughton was remanded on bail for a status hearing on July 6 by Judge David McKegg, who said he did not believe he was likely to flee the country as he had a three-year-old daughter here.
Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Rex Morris said the Immigration Department knew about Broughton, and was likely to seek his removal.
Defence lawyer Steven Zindel said Broughton had told police he was an overstayer.
He had sought permanent residency but his lawyer had not followed the application procedure correctly.
Broughton denied assaulting and threatening to kill his daughter's stepfather on May 12, and would appeal any decision to deport him, Mr Zindel said.
