Former Auckland student Emily Longley died in her ex-boyfriend's bed and may have overdosed on drugs and alcohol, it has been revealed.
The 17-year-old aspiring model stayed at 19-year-old Elliot Turner's parents' home in the affluent suburb of Queen's Park in Bournemouth, south England, on Friday night.
He and a 17-year-old youth were arrested but have been released on bail as police await toxicology results that will show the cause of death.
Police sources have said that Miss Longley may have taken drugs.
Mr Turner lived with his younger brother Aaron, father Leigh and the boys' mother. It is not known if the parents were home on Friday night.
No neighbours spoken to by the Herald reported hearing a party at the house.
Mr Turner was seen on Saturday morning sitting in an ambulance with his head in his hands after the death.
Miss Longley's mother, Caroline, arrived with her other daughter, Hannah, 15, from Auckland and is understood to have met police yesterday but broke down in tears and was unable to speak when approached.
Her father, Mark, who lives in Whakatane, arrived later after a stopover in Hong Kong. He said that despite the revelations about the ex-boyfriend, his daughter's death remained a mystery.
"I've just got off the plane and it's now a two-hour drive - [but] I don't have any more news. Her death is still a mystery," he told the Herald.
Miss Longley, who was born in west London but emigrated to New Zealand with her parents eight years ago, lived with her grandparents, Ronald and Zosia Longley.
She was sent to stay with them at their seafront property in nearby Southbourne after falling in with the "wrong crowd" after her time at Westlake Girls High and Takapuna Grammar.
Miss Longley is thought to have split up with Mr Turner recently.
Days before she died, she had complained on Facebook that a stalker kept asking her out.
Mr Turner had replied to her fearful comments: "It's because they know you're single now."
The couple had a string of public, romantic conversations on Facebook and on April 1, before a visit back to New Zealand, Miss Longley had written jokingly they were in a civil union.
Her former boyfriend is pictured smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol on another social networking site, Bebo. He lists his interests as "Drinkin Smokin Pub'n Bar'n Club'n".
He works as a jewellery buyer for local store R.E. Porter.
Leigh Turner told a neighbour his family had moved to the city - which has a population of about 163,000 - from the nearby village of Broadstone to be closer to Bournemouth School, which Aaron attends.
The neighbour told the Herald she had spoken to him and Aaron on Thursday about her red azalea flowers.
"He said, 'My wife said if I saw anyone in the garden to ask them what kind of plants those were,' then he introduced me to his son - who he said was the youngest son - and I shook his hand."
The Queenswood Ave house was still cordoned off by police tape yesterday.
Several teenage girls had brought flowers to lay outside over the weekend but they appeared to have been cleared by Monday.
Miss Longley attended Brockenhurst College, about 37km north in the New Forest area. A flag at the school flew at half-mast on Monday.
The 4.28pm bus she was supposed to be taking back towards Bournemouth was packed full of students speculating on how the popular student died.
Several teenagers said she was a beautiful girl who stood out among the school's 12,800 full-time and part-time students.
One said: "I saw the story in the local paper and thought it was a famous person who had died when I saw her picture. But the teacher told me today she went to Brockenhurst."
During her Auckland high school years, she worked for management company 62 Models after being discovered by founder Sara Tetro, said staff.
She juggled her work as a model, including two photoshoots with Creme magazine, with competitive rowing.
