Over-limit taxi driver ordered off the rank

A drink-driving taxi driver has been stripped of his right to carry passengers.

Kulvar Singh, 31, from Papatoetoe, South Auckland, was stopped at a police checkpoint on Karangahape Rd at 2am on February 19.

Police said the Reliable Cabs driver was carrying three passengers and blew 839mcg of alcohol per litre of breath. The legal limit is 400mcg.

Because it was more than 650mcg, his driving licence was automatically suspended for 28 days.

Singh was convicted after pleading guilty in the Auckland District Court this week. He was remanded to May 27 for sentencing.

New Zealand Transport Agency spokesman Andy Thackwray said Singh's ability to carry passengers was suspended yesterday. The hold will be in place until the agency decides whether to ban him for up to 10 years.

Singh's wife said he no longer worked for the company.
