KEY POINTS:
More than $4.5 million was spent on investigating allegations of sexual violation by police officers against Louise Nicholas and others.
Former police officers Brad Shipton, Bob Schollum and Clint Rickards were tried last year for raping Mrs Nicholas in Rotorua during the 1980's.
All three were acquitted, but it was later revealed that Shipton and Schollum had been convicted and jailed in 2005 of the pack rape of another woman in Mt Maunganui in 1989.
Police National Crime Manager Detective Superintendent Win Van der Velde said today the cost of the investigation into sexual violation complaints by Mrs Nicholas and others involving former and current police officers, between the time the investigation was established in February 2004 to September 1 2008, was $4,641,780.
Police decided to release the amount today after a number of requests into the cost of the investigation, he said.
"This was a case that consumed many thousands of staff hours and from the start of the investigation in February 2004 to October 2006 some 99,527 hours were expended," Mr Van der Velde said.
The bulk of the investigation was carried out between February 2004 and October 2006, he said.
