Lansdowne and Rathkeale College will both be fancying their chances of an outright win when matches in the Wairarapa Cricket Association's Bidwell Cup two-day competition continue on Sunday.
It would seem that only the weather man could stop Lansdowne from taking maximum points from the Academy X1.
With openers Henry Cameron (140) and Sam Curtis (83) leading the way Lansdowne were able to declare their first innings closed at a healthy 272-3 after having earlier dismissed their opposition for 138.
And Academy were making hard work of things again when stumps were drawn being 53-3.
This left them with still 81 runs to score to make Lansdowne bat a second time and an early finish is clearly on the cards.
Competition leaders Red Star are in trouble against Rathkeale College and they have only themselves to blame.
Several catches were dropped as the students reached 278 in their first innings, and then to make matters worse the batting performance was below par too, five wickets falling before stumps with only 72 runs on the board.
The immediate challenge for Red Star will be to score the 100?plus runs required to avoid the follow on, but against a Rathkeale attack which includes prolific wicket takers Doug Bracewell and Dean van Deventer, the odds seemed stacked against them.
The clock could be the worst enemy for Rathkeale.
They will need to pick up the remaining five first innings wickets relatively quickly so that they have a time to dismiss Red Star a second time, and then maybe score some more runs themselves for maximum points.
Outright wins look likely
