An Outback version of the Subaru Impreza is unlikely to go on sale in New Zealand.
Subaru New Zealand chief Wally Dumper hasn't entirely ruled it out and is watching to see how the vehicle is received in Australia.
But the smaller Outback doesn't offer anything Subaru doesn't have already.
It comes with the standard roof rails and two-tone Outback paint job but it doesn't have extra ride height, unlike the bigger Outback Legacy.
It is believed the Outback Impreza would clash in price with the RX model anyway and further muddy the marketing waters.
"We'll see how it goes," said Dumper. "I don't like having too many different models in our lineup."
