A child who was sitting outside the Eketahuna Four Square store on Saturday had a lucky escape when a car crashed into the front of the store, narrowly missing the youngster.
The crash happened at around 3.45pm when the car careered into the front of the store, causing substantial damage. The child had been sitting outside the store at a table just a metre or so from where the crash occurred.
A passerby, who did not wish to be named, said it was thought the driver of the car, which had two occupants, mistakenly pushed a foot down on the accelerator while meaning to engage the brake.
There were several people inside the store when the crash happened but remarkably nobody was injured. The passerby said that in the aftermath of the incident, people in the store were talking about "how lucky the child had been" to have emerged unscathed.
Police attended the scene and the Eketahuna fire brigade was called out and pushed the car off the footpath.
