KEY POINTS:
Four people were injured when a car ploughed into a group of teenagers in Whangamata yesterday afternoon.
Inspector Ian Brooker, of police northern communications, said two people appeared to have been dragged some distance before the early model Holden stopped.
Robert Hoskins was visiting his mother when he saw the car jump the curb on Otahu Rd.
"It was obviously speeding," he said. "I looked out the driveway and thought to myself, 'It's going to hit someone'."
Hoskins went inside to contact the police but, by the time he finished the call, the car had run into a group of eight people sitting in lawn chairs in their front yard.
The resort town is playing host to the annual Beach Hop nostalgia festival this weekend, with classic cars from the 1950s and 1960s.
Inspector Glen Dunbier, officer in charge of Operation Beach Hop, said the Holden was not part of the festival, nor was the driver from Whangamata.
One of the people struck was flown to Waikato hospital and a passenger was taken by ambulance. The driver has been arrested.
