Crack Masterton golfer Ben Campbell finished fourth in the Riversdale Cup tournament in Melbourne after a final round 75 yesterday.
Campbell shot a third round three-under par 69 on Sunday to move to seven-under overall and a share of the lead with Australian Nathan Holman in one of the oldest and most prestigious international amateur tournaments across the Tasman.
They were one shot ahead of second round leader Matthew Steiger and fellow Australian Brett Drewett, with a further shot back to another Aussie Todd Sinnott and Kiwi Fraser Wilkin.
On a testing day at the Riversdale course, Campbell remained patient during his third round effort, making birdies at two of the last two holes in his 69.
Now based in Melbourne for much of the summer, Campbell has moved to No16 in the world amateur rankings and was aiming to become only the second New Zealander to win the Riversdale Cup, following Matthew Holten.
That would have been a huge feat considering the event has been running since 1896. But unfortunately it was not to be with Campbell never recovering from a horror start in his final round, dropping four shots in his opening five holes and finishing with a three-over 75.
Holman, whose first round score of 62 was a course record, went on to take the title in a playoff with Steiger.
Fellow Kiwi Ryan Fox, the son of former All Black Grant Fox, fired a two-under 70 in his fourth round to move up the leaderboard and finish on 284, the same total as Campbell.
A total of 24 New Zealand players - including Campbell - are among the 300 taking part in the Australian men's and women's amateur championships in Melbourne this week. They will be joined by players from nine other countries.
