Otago plane crash survivor 'not in a bad condition'

A man who survived a plane crash in which another man died is in "not a bad condition" in Dunedin Hospital.

Otago Aero Club president Colin Chalmers said both men on the microlight flying from Taieri to Omarama yesterday morning were members of the club - New Zealand's oldest.

He said there was still no information on what caused the crash, in remote farmland late in the morning.

"We have absolutely no idea. It was a perfectly good day," he said.

He said the man who died was "a very long-time friend of mine". Chalmers visited the family yesterday, but police are not releasing his name until all members of his family have been contacted.

"They haven't got them all together yet," Chalmers said.

He said the surviving man who was flown to Dunedin Hospital was recovering well.

"He's in not a bad condition. He has a few broken bones, I believe," Chalmers said.

But club members were shaken by the crash.

"When I left last night it was all pretty new. They couldn't believe what was happening," he said. "They are all pretty bloody shook up about it."

Chalmers plans to visit the surviving man in Dunedin today.
