Organic vegetables free from chemicals are hard to come by but South Wairarapa women Claire Bleakley and Peggy Duncan have made the search easier by setting up shop in Greytown.
Every Thursday you can find the organic-vegetable growers selling their wares in a stall alongside the Marconee Fresh Fish truck and Wakelin House.
The pair were once part of the Upper Hutt Farmers' market but it folded, prompting them to find another outlet for their homegrown vegetables and free-range eggs.
"We had a really good response from the Upper Hutt Farmers' Market and since there is already a great farmers' market in Masterton, we thought we would try setting something up in the South Wairarapa," Ms Bleakley said.
The stall has grown since it was started six months ago as a small table on the side of the road, and continues to grow as more people become aware of organic produce.
"There is a big need for organics now and when we started off with our little stall people were really excited about it, and now we're thinking about setting one up in Featherston."
With the exception of the avocados, which are from Kerikeri, all of the produce is grown locally by Claire, Peggy, and other certified organic growers in the Wairarapa.
"There are 10 members of Organic Farm New Zealand here in the Wairarapa, so that goes to show that organics are doing really well here."
Along with vegetables and eggs, Claire and Peggy have also sold chestnuts, which sold out, and are now selling walnuts.
"It's all very humane. The eggs come from free-range chickens that have been fed organic food and all of the produce is free from sprays.
"Sprays tend to inhibit the nutrients in the produce, so organics give you all the nutrients and they also taste delicious."
