KEY POINTS:
The traditional long wait in traffic is even more frustrating for people heading north from Auckland for the long weekend today.
A massive queue has built up on State Highway One, because of the Orewa bottleneck.
Police are recommending motorists consider State Highway 16 from the north-western motorway.
As it happens, today is the day top officials, from the Transport Minister down, are checking out the new $365 million toll road which opens tomorrow and is designed to eliminate the very delays motorists are facing today.
There will be no charge for using the toll road on Sunday and Monday, but after that a one way trip will cost from $2 depending on vehicle size and payment method.
