With 11 accused, 14 lawyers, and a panel of about 130 jurors to choose from, the Operation Rhino trial lumbered into motion in Christchurch District Court today.
The accused - two of them were missing on the first day - collectively face about 200 charges of burglary, receiving stolen property, theft, and conspiracy, as a result of the big police operation. All have pleaded not guilty.
The opening day in front of Judge Gary MacAskill involved two courtrooms because the extra large jury panel had to be gathered in one whole courtroom awaiting selection.
After the indictments were read and the jury selected, the jury was sent away for the rest of the day and the judge heard a series of pre-trial applications.
Judge MacAskill told jurors the trial was expected to last five weeks.
The Crown plans to call 137 witnesses.
