KEY POINTS:
Two cars defying flashing lights, bells and barrier arms narrowly avoided being hit by a log train in the Bay of Plenty yesterday, just days after a brother and sister died on a crossing.
Ontrack staff are shocked at the behaviour of the drivers, whose registration numbers were taken by the train driver.
The cars went through a crossing 1.5km east of the Maketu crossing, the second one just missing the barrier arms as they descended. "It seems incredible that after all the anguish of recent days ... two vehicle drivers should have such blatant disregard for human life," said an Ontrack spokesman.
