Sid Tatana is a realist.
While happy with Marist's 24-18 win over defending champions Carterton in their Wairarapa-Bush senior first division rugby match at Carterton coach Tatana was adamant they would have "to do a lot better" to win the premiership.
"It was good in parts and ordinary in parts, it got a lot closer than it should have," Tatana said in reflecting on a match which saw Marist lead 12-3 at halftime and move out to a commanding 24-3 advantage in the second spell.
Tatana said Carterton's comeback was a combination of their grit and determination and Marist becoming too loose in their play and not competing for possession with the same hunger they had shown previously.
"You have to give Carterton credit for the fight they showed but we didn't help ourselves. We got too complacent and you can't do that and expect to win the competition, can you?"
Marist scored four tries to pick up an extra bonus point to go with the four points for the win and one of them was scored by impressive loose forward Joe Nuku, whose aggressive running often had the Carterton defence stretched.
Promotion to the Wairarapa-Bush squad must be close at hand for him Corey Reid was another Marist forward to have a strong game and young halfback Api Matenga again stamped himself as a player of extreme promise.
Nuku, Ben Couch, Phil Aporo and Renata Matthews scored the Marist tries and Patrick Rimene kicked two conversions.
The most satisfactory aspect of the game for Carterton was that they too picked up a bonus point for finishing seven points or less from the winning side.
They scored three tries, these going to Joe Harwood, Lance Stevenson and Jono Hurley.
Gladstone bounced back from their loss to Marist seven days previous by scoring nine tries in their 59-12 demolition of Pioneer.
Gladstone had the better of the exchanges at both back and forward with Pioneer seldom getting the quality of possession required to get any momentum into their attacks.
Kurt Simmonds,Steve Wilkinson, James Bruce, Angus Crisp, R.Tamihana, Mike Spence (2) and Matt Easton (2) were listed as the Gladstone try scorers and Easton added seven conversions. Jamie Smallman and Stu Waipuka scored the Pioneer tries and Nathan Rolls kicked a conversion.
Eketahuna made it two wins from as many matches in the main championship round with a deserved 19-3 win over Greytown-Tuhirangi.
The return of key playmaker Simanu Simanu was welcomed by Eketahuna and his try, conversion and four penalties was a classic illustration of his value to the side. Kingi Kaiwai kicked a penalty for Greytown -Tuhirangi.
SECOND DIVISION
Masterton Red Star served notice they could make a decent bid for major honours in the Wairarapa-Bush senior second division competition when they ran in nine tries in beating Puketoi by a mammoth 59-11 at Memorial Park on Saturday.
The two teams had met just a fortnight previous with Puketoi running out comfortable 19-6 winners but and any hint of a Masterton Red Star reversal wasn't apparent in the opening stages which saw Puketoi threatening to control things up front and take an early 3-0 lead through a Joe Hull penalty.
And even when Masterton Red Star struck back with a try to winger Loga Loga their lead was short lived with Hull kicking his second penalty to give Puketoi a 6-5 advantage.
The only other scoring action in the first half came when hard-working Masterton Red Star prop Mike Bound crashed over for a try and with Jamie Fraser's conversion they went to the break with a slender 12-6 lead
To say the second half was all one way traffic would be a gross under-statement. Aided and abetted by some shocking Puketoi handling, Masterton Red Star went on the rampage, adding a further eight tries to their tally, all but two of which were converted.
Spearheading a strong effort from the Masterton Red Star pack was young English lock Gavin Jones in what was his debut game for the club.He was impressive in the lineouts and even more so with his mobility about the paddock. The try he scored late in the game was just reward for a fine all-round performance.
Partnering Jones in the middle row was another young Englishman in Tom Robinson and he too appealed as a likely prospect while Nick Hutton was typically industrious in the loose and Bound and Nathan Haglund shirked nothing in the tight.
Masterton Red Star also benefitted immensely from having an old hand in Peter Bresaz in the pivotal role of first-five. His tactical nous was always evident as was the speed and elusiveness of wingers Phil Brown, who scored two fine tries, and Loga Loga.
Brown (2), Loga Loga, Bound, Henson, McCallum, Price, Jones and Haira were the try scorers for Masterton Red Star ad Fraser kicked seven conversions.
Puketoi had every reason to feel disappointment at the end result.Their forwards, with Evan Small , Luke Abbott and try scorer Victor Githae prominent, had their moments but the backs dropped enough ball to last them a whole season, and that was pretty much end of story for them.
Martinborough went to a clear lead on the second division table with their hard-fought 19-15 win over East Coast. Wairarapa-Bush rep Greg Wilson scored two tries for the winners, who were also awarded a penalty try. East Coast managed two tries through Thomson.
