KEY POINTS:
The summit of One Tree Hill in Auckland will be closed between 11pm and 7am, Auckland City Council announced today.
The move was made to stop an increasing amount of anti-social behaviour taking place there at night.
The council said two gates would be installed at the Sorrento junction to stop cars going up to the summit. However, members of the public will still be able to walk the 1km access road.
No date has been set for the gates' installation.
"The summit is not a safe place at night, and the time and cost of cleaning up after teenagers and other groups that have gathered there in vehicles is high," said councillor Greg Moyle, chairman of the council's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee.
"Hopefully the installation of the gates will be a long term solution to curb the drinking, vandalism and crime currently taking place."
There will be no increase to police and security monitoring in the park.
The summit road opening time will be extended when needed for special events.
