A single ticket for using buses, trains and ferries in Auckland is being developed by the Auckland Regional Council.
But at a potential cost of tens of millions of dollars, a one-ticket-fits-all for Auckland may come to nothing.
ARC transport action plan director Paul Bradburn said there was no question integrated ticketing would make getting around Auckland by public transport easier but it was yet to be seen if the costs outweighed the benefits.
Comparable systems in overseas cities have cost tens of millions of dollars.
The high cost of integrated ticketing includes the introduction of sophisticated equipment on public transport vehicles and establishing a financial clearing house to share revenue between operators.
Mr Bradburn said the ARC was in the early stages of developing an integrated ticketing system and had employed a professional consulting firm, Sinclair Knight Merz, as technical advisers.
Public transport operators and local councils would shortly be involved in the project.
