The one thousandth kiwi chick hatched under the Kiwi Rescue programme finally broke through its shell this morning.
The chick has been named Hupai, which means 'overcome', and is resting with its mum at the Rotorua Kiwi Encounter.
The birds are facing extinction, with fewer than 100,000 left nationwide.
