KEY POINTS:
At least one person is believed dead after a car plunged into the Ngunguru River 16km northeast of Whangarei between 5.30pm and 6pm yesterday.
Police said the vehicle was submerged about 7m deep. One, and possibly two, people were believed to be trapped.
