The Auckland Council has a team of 40 people assembled and 110 potential sites to fast-track the construction of 39,000 new homes in the city over three years.
The council is setting up a housing project office to speed up resource consents, co-ordinate water, power, transport and other services and smooth the path for developers in "special housing areas".
It is also talking to the development community and has identified about 110 potential sites to be designated "special housing areas" for fast-track, residential development.
A bill is going through Parliament under urgency to create more affordable housing by fast-tracking the supply of land designated for housing development. It provides for the Auckland Housing Accord between the Government and council to build 39,000 new homes to take the heat out of Auckland's property market.
Regional strategy and research manager Ree Anderson will lead the office and be joined by staff from Auckland Transport and Watercare Services. The office will be governed by a project steering group, chaired by chief executive Doug McKay and including Watercare chief executive Mark Ford and Auckland Transport chief executive David Warburton.
