One person is in serious condition following a two-vehicle crash in Whanganui overnight.
Police said the incident occurred on Liverpool Street between College and Grey Streets at 3am.
A powerpole was struck in the crash, which cut power to the surrounding area for several hours.
Police said the white Ford Telstar and grey Toyota Celica sustained substantial damage and it appears the vehicles had been racing each other.
Four people were taken to Whanganui Base Hospital. One of the occupants was in serious condition, while the others suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The serious crash unit from Palmerston North was called in to assist with the investigation, and will carry out a detailed examination of the scene.
Any witnesses or members of the public with information are asked to contact police.
