A person has been rescued from a rip at Mount Maunganui beach.
The person had been at the beach when they were understood to be experiencing difficulty in the water near Marine Parade at 4.11pm yesterdayafternoon.
A police spokeswoman said the report originally stated that three people had been caught in a rip and washed out to sea. A rescue helicopter was notified.
However, within 10 minutes the report of three people was amended to one. That person had been rescued and taken back to shore. Medical treatment was not required and the helicopter was stood down, she said.
The incident comes as Surf Lifesaving New Zealand and NZME launch a Between the Flags campaign, aimed at raising funds for, and awareness of, the fantastic work our lifeguards do around the country.
