One person is in critical condition after a crash between a truck and a car in Stillwater, north Auckland.

One person is in critical condition after a crash involving a car and a truck in Stillwater, north Auckland, with a witness describing the aftermath of a head-on smash.

A police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the scene at the intersection of Jackson Way and East Coast Road at about 2.35pm.

“The driver of the car is currently in a critical condition.”

A north Auckland resident told the Herald a vehicle and a four-or-five-tonne truck collided head-on. The force of the crash smashed the car across the other side of East Coast Rd, leaving its female driver badly injured.

“There was still steam coming out the engine of the car that the lady was trapped in,” he said.

“There were two really good guys directing the traffic because the truck was blocking the vision of the people coming north along East Coast Rd.”

The witness said three people were helping the woman.

“There were people there picking up pieces of debris. The car will be totalled.”

Hato Hone St John said it was notified of a motor vehicle incident on Jackson Way / East Coast Rd, Stillwater, just after 2.30pm.

“Two ambulances, one rapid response unit, and one operations manager attended.

“One patient, in a critical condition, is being transported to Auckland City Hospital.”

Police said the Serious Crash Unit rushed to the scene and a section of East Coast Rd was being diverted.

“Northbound traffic is being diverted off at Bawden Rd, with southbound traffic being diverted off at Spur Rd.

“Please expect delays or avoid the area if at all possible this afternoon.”
