One person critically injured after crash on SH2 near Bethlehem

One person is in a critical condition after a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2 west of Tauranga last night.

Police said the incident took place near Bethlehem between Taniwha Place and Wairoa Pa Rd.

Emergency services were first alerted around 8pm.

A police media spokeswoman said the crash involved a car and a four-wheel drive. Both sole occupants were injured - one critically, while the other received minor injuries.

The critically injured person, who was initially trapped, was taken to Tauranga Hospital.

The spokeswoman said multiple other people not in vehicles were also injured.

A diversion was put in place around 9.30pm and the road re-opened around midnight.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating and the police are appealing for witnesses.
