KEY POINTS:
Tauranga's three Hell Pizza outlets have not taken part in the company's controversial promotion giving away free condoms to help advertise its new meatlovers pizza.
A nationwide pamphlet drop last week advertised the "Lust" pizza and contained a condom and instructions on its use during sex.
The promotion has fuelled public anger and attracted complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority.
Advertisements from Hell Pizza defending the promotion have appeared in newspapers around the country, citing statistics on Aids, unwanted pregnancies and the high rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
But Brent Robinson, who runs the three Hell Pizza stores in Tauranga, confirmed he was not running the promotion, without giving his reasons.
Lorry Haycock, whose 17-year-old daughter works at a Hell Pizza Tauranga store, backed the decision, saying it was inappropriate for a business which employed a lot of young people.
Hell Pizza spokesman Kirk MacGibbon said each of the 64 franchises was given the opportunity to opt out of the condom mail drop campaign because of its controversial nature.
"We were perhaps a little disappointed that the campaign did not run in the Tauranga area but we respect their decision to not be part of the campaign," Mr MacGibbon said.
