KEY POINTS:
The North Island's main trunk remains cut off, and State Highway 1 is only partly open, while a rail overbridge near Marton undergoes repairs which could take four days.
The bridge was severely damaged on Wednesday night when a south-bound truck carrying concrete culverts hit a bridge span, spilling debris into the path of a north-bound truck.
The second truck hit the side of the bridge and caught fire.
Neither driver was badly hurt.
Transit New Zealand spokesman Errol Christiansen said while the bridge was being repaired, one lane of traffic would be open at night to avoid sending heavy traffic through Marton.
