One killed in Waikato crash

A 68-year-old Hamilton man was killed and his wife seriously injured after their car veered off State Highway 1 into a ditch near Hamilton last night.

The man, who was driving, lost control of his vehicle about 6.30pm at Horotiu, 14km north of Hamilton, police said.

The woman was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. Today she remained in a serious but stable condition.

Police said neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors that contributed to the crash.

SH1 was closed for about three hours after the crash.
