One person was killed and four others injured in a single-car crash in Invercargill last night.
Emergency services were called to the crash on Matua Rd in Otatara about 9pm after the car hit a power pole, police said.
One of the car's occupants was pronounced dead at the scene and the others were taken to Southland Hospital with moderate injuries.
Firefighters and paramedics spent two hours cutting the occupants from the car.
Power to 120 households was cut after the power pole fell across a driveway, and should be restored later today.
Police said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.
The serious crash unit was investigating.
