An explosion at a garage in South Auckland is being treated as a suspected meth lab, police say.
A man was injured in the blast at Rukumoana Place in Clendon Park, Manurewa, about 11.55am.
Firefighters had been looking at the "possibility there was chemicals involved", Scott Osmond from the Fire Service northern communications centre said earlier.
Initial reports to emergency services claimed a car battery had exploded, police said. However, when officers arrived at the scene it was determined there were chemicals present.
Police clandestine lab investigators were now at the scene, and would conduct an investigation into whether the explosion was caused by chemicals used to 'cook' methamphetamine, known as 'P', police said.
