Armed police descended on a street in the Auckland suburb of Point England earlier today after a man was seen with a firearm.
A Herald video reporter said Point England Primary School and Kindergarten were in lockdown after reported sightings of the man, who was believed to be walking around with a double-barrelled shotgun.
Tamaki College was also locked down.
A house on Elsteree Avenue was raided and witnesses saw three people have being taken away.
One witness said a man came out of the Elsteree address, went to stop and was tackled to the ground by an officer and taken into custody.
A police spokesman said police were called out at about 11.30am after a man was seen with a firearm. The man was taken into custody and a firearm recovered at an Estree Avenue property.
