One driver, two cars impounded in two hours

One man has managed to have two cars impounded in the space of two hours, thanks to new technology being used by Waikato police.

An officer pulled a man over on State Highway 1 near Hamilton on Thursday after his new Automatic Number Plate Recognition device indicated the vehicle was of interest to police.

He then scanned the driver's licence with a new SMART device, which told him the man was also disqualified from driving.

The man's car was impounded and the man was released on bail.

A short time later the same highway patrol officer pulled over another over and found the same man was behind the wheel.

The man explained he'd borrowed a friend's car to go and pick up some items he had left in his own vehicle.

That car's owner is apparently far from impressed, as now his vehicle has been impounded too.
