Talented Wairarapa thoroughbred Fritzy Boy became the first North Island-trained winner of the Gore Guineas on Saturday.
The $60,000 listed race was first run all of 35 years ago and is now the opening leg of the southern triple crown for three-year-olds.
Owned by John Jury of Greytown and Alby MacGregor of Masterton and trained by Alby MacGregor at Opaki, Fritzy Boy will earn a $100,000 bonus for his connections if he can win the remaining two legs, the Dunedin Guineas at Wingatui on February 2 and the Southland Guineas at Invercargill on February 16.
His Gore Guineas victory was Fritzy Boy's fourth in just eight starts and he impressed jockey Brian Hibberd with his finishing burst over the last 100m. "He hit the line ready hard," Hibberd said.
Fritzy Boy will be based at the Rangiora property of MacGregor's son, Dean, as he prepares for the Dunedin Guineas.
