KEY POINTS:
Despite the atrocious driving conditions over most of the country, there was only one reported fatal accident at the weekend.
A pedestrian died on Friday night when he was hit by a truck near Taupo.
Keepa Reon Pitiroi, 30, was struck by a truck and trailer travelling north on State Highway 1 at Waitahanui, about 15km south of Taupo, at about 11.30pm. He died at the scene.
Constable Casey Wellwood, of Taupo police, said it appeared Mr Pitiroi had been returning home after socialising with friends at another address when he stepped out on the road.
The driver swerved in an attempt to miss him.
